Why not teach an actor a “way” to tell his/her story?

6/13/2009

I coach a lot of young actors and am often asked the question “How should I do this?”
or “How should I say that line?” Giving an actor OF ANY AGE a line read is in my mind, a huge disservice. There are a million ways to tell a story (to approach the sides). What will separate an actor in the CD’s office is not getting it “right” but telling it from the actor’s own unique perspective. The CD doesn’t know how it should “sound”; he or she wants to go on a journey. The CD wants to be transcended; to travel with the actor.
